The New Nursing Assistant: Range of Motion Exercises
Overview:When individuals are immobilized for prolonged periods of time, an essential part of the recovery process includes maintaining the full range of joint motion. A consistent program of range of motion exercises helps maintain joint mobility and prevents some of the complications associated with prolonged immobility such as decreased peripheral circulation, skin breakdown, and contractures. This program teaches new nursing assistants the important skills necessary for performing range of motion exercises.
Using this format, this program demonstrates performing range of motion exercises for:
- the head, neck, and spine
- upper extremities: shoulders, elbows wrists, fingers
- pelvis and lower extremities: hips, knees, ankles, toes
- side and prone positions
